What is the church, really?
It is easy to think of "church" as a building — walls, a roof, a steeple. But the New Testament insists on something far greater.
A home of hope in Jesus Christ
Whoever you are, however heavy the load — there is a Savior who welcomes you, and a family ready to walk with you.
Matthew 11:28
Every Sunday — all are welcome, come as you are.
"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness." — John 8:12
The Good News · நற்செய்தி
Everything about this church — the building, the music, the fellowships — exists for one reason: to point you to Jesus. Here, in the simplest words, is the hope we hold.
Before you did anything to earn it, God loved you. "God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16) You are not an accident. You are wanted.
We have all turned from God and gone our own way. That brokenness is the source of so much of our pain, guilt, and emptiness. The Bible calls it sin — and it separates us from the One who made us. None of us can fix it on our own.
"While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8) Jesus took our sin to the cross and rose again, defeating death. He did for us what we could never do for ourselves — and He offers it as a gift, not a wage. "By grace you have been saved, through faith — not by works." (Ephesians 2:8-9)
"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9) He is not far. "I stand at the door and knock." (Revelation 3:20) You only have to open it.
A prayer, if your heart is ready
"Lord Jesus, I know I am broken and I need You. Thank You for dying and rising for me. I turn from my old way and ask You to be my Savior and Lord. Make me new. Amen."
If you prayed that — even haltingly, even unsure — heaven rejoices, and we'd love to walk with you next.
"The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." — Psalm 34:18
Built on His Rock · திருச்சபையின் வரலாறு
Jesus said, "On this rock I will build My church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it." (Matthew 16:18) Our true foundation is not stone or mortar, nor any denomination or name — it is Christ Himself, the cornerstone. We are, in Peter's words, "living stones, being built into a spiritual house." (1 Peter 2:5) The story below is simply how God has been building this particular house, in this corner of Tambaram, since the last century.
Protestant Christianity reached Chennai nearly 300 years ago and spread through Tamil Nadu by the labors of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society and the Church of Scotland Mission. In Tambaram — once a small village — the gospel took root through evangelistic efforts from Vandalur, until Rev. William Gnanananda baptized 11 believers on December 21, 1929, forming the first congregation amid real opposition.
"That they all may be one."
When the Church of South India was formed in 1947, Tambaram's Christian witness grew stronger. The foundation stone was laid on January 16, 1954, and the church was dedicated on April 13, 1954 — a lamp set on a stand for the whole town to see.
Today, by God's grace, that small beginning has become a worshipping family alive in every ministry and fellowship — and a new church building is rising even now, that the next generations might gather to know and love the same unchanging Christ.

Chairman & Presbyter in-charge
Beloved people of God, I greet you in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Whatever season you find yourself in, the heart of our faith remains the same: "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light." (Isaiah 9:2) The coming of Jesus still scatters our fears and fills us with hope.
From the shepherds to the wise men, people of every kind found their joy in Christ — and so may you. Jesus came for all people, bringing peace to every heart that will receive Him. However you arrive at our doors, you arrive welcome.
May the Lord bring you renewed hope, joy, and strength. Come, and let us seek Him together.
It gives me immense joy to greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ on the website of a congregation whose story God has been writing since the 1950s. By His grace, St. Matthew's today is alive in every ministry and fellowship — and I thank each of our fellowships from the heart for the marvellous, faithful work they have offered to the Lord over these years.
As our new church building draws near to completion, I warmly invite the whole congregation to pray earnestly and to give generously toward it — remembering always that the true church is never the walls, but the people: living stones being built together in Christ. We look forward, by God's leading, to St. Matthew's being raised as a cathedral at the bifurcation of the diocese; yet our greatest aim is simpler and higher — that Christ be honored, and that the weary and broken-hearted find a home here.
Let us rise up together to build — in stone, and far more in faith, love, and service. We will keep you updated with the life and activities of our church as often as the Lord allows.
Mr. N.G.R. Christopher Selvaraj · Hon. Secretary
Honorary Secretary

It is easy to think of "church" as a building — walls, a roof, a steeple. But the New Testament insists on something far greater.
Every person who has ever walked into this church arrived with a story — and so many of those stories began in some kind of darkness.
There is a particular kind of tiredness that sleep cannot touch — the weariness of carrying things too heavy for one heart.

Yet remember: we build a place, but God builds His people. Every gift serves Him and His family — never our own glory.
